Fall Flowers for your Garden!

Fall is here, but that doesn’t mean that the growing season is over. In fact, there are flowers that thrive during the fall season. These are some of the flowers that will continue to bloom in your garden until the first frost.

Aster aster

This daisy-like flower, which comes in pinks, blues, purples and whites,  will add colour and life to your fall garden! Asters bloom from late summer to the first fall. Deadheading early in the season will increase the blooms in the fall. This long lasting flower also makes a great cut flower!

This pretty flower is a favourite with gardeners, adding beauty and elegance to the fall landscape. Japanese anemones are easy to grow; they will grow in just about any soil condition (acidic, neutral or alkaline)! Available in shades of pink, white or purple, these beauties will bloom from late summer to fall. But be warned, Japanese anemones can spread quickly and prolifically. They would need large, open spaces.  And they would make excellent cut flowers.

Every fall garden should have some toad lilies! These exotic-looking flowers are add visual interest and contrast to the landscape. Toad lilies are easy to grow and they are drought-resistant. They thrive in the shade in humus-rich soil. These spotted flowers will bloom from late summer to late fall. They would be ideal in containers or in gardens. They also make great cut flowers.

No garden is complete without some chrysanthemums! Gardeners love growing these colourful flowers in the fall, which bloom abundantly in shades yellows, whites, reds, pinks, and purples. They continue to bloom when other flowers have already faded and wilted away as long as they get enough sun. These flowers can be grown in the garden or as a container plant. Chrysanthemums are also a favourite with florists as they make long-lasting cut flowers. And you can even make tea with it!

Black-eyed susans are popular fall flowers because they are ridiculously easy to grow! These wildflowers will grow and thrive without any effort! It’s as easy as sowing the seeds in your garden and letting nature work its magic! Just be sure to give these flowers room to grow; they tend to spread and overcrowd other flowers. They will bloom from early summer until the first frost.

Climate Zones: 3-9

So consider a fall garden. They don’t require as much work. Flowers require less water and attention than during the summer. Plus, flowers and plants are usually on sale this time of the year.
