Frost Tolerant Flowers for Your Garden

It’s November. Trees are bare. Most of the leaves have fallen. The days are noticeably shorter and cooler. Frost is settling in. But the gardening season is not quite over just yet. There are hardy, frost-tolerant flowers that can survive the cold temperatures and frost until the first snowfall.

Here are some of those frost-tolerant flowers:

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums are the quintessential fall flowers! Not only will they brighten up any garden, they are hardy and frost-tolerant. Chrysanthemums are available in a wide variety of colours including white, yellow,orange pink and red. They will bloom from fall until the first deep freeze. And as a bonus, they are also edible and make a delicious tea!

Dianthus

Dianthus plants actually grow best in cooler climates. Gardeners valued these plants for their attractive red, white or pink flowers and grass-like foliage. These fragrant flowers are easy to grow and are ideal as border plants and ground covers in the garden. They could also be grown in containers.

Pansy

These dainty looking flowers may not look like it, but pansies are so hardy and frost-tolerant that they will even bloom in the snow! Pansies can survive extreme cold climates and many varieties were bred specifically for fall planting. Pansies are available in a variety of colours including white, blue, yellow, pink and orange. They are also edible.

Pot Marigold (calendula officinalis)

Pot marigold bloom yellow, gold or orange blooms in the late summer until the first frost. They’re known to be very-cold tolerant. Gardeners love pot marigold.
